- Recording the area in front of a family computer during agreed, communicated monitoring of your own household devices.
The common thread is the same as with live viewing: the machine is yours, the purpose is protecting your property or your household rules, and the people who may be captured know about it.
The audio question: check your local law first
Recording sound is legally different from recording video in many places. Several US states require the consent of everyone being recorded for audio - in some states, all parties must consent. Many other countries have similar or stricter protections for private conversations. Two practical consequences:
- Where consent is required, make sure the people who could be recorded have agreed - and can show it.
- Do not leave microphone recording running in rooms where people talk privately, such as a child's bedroom or a shared living space used for phone calls.

Can the recording run when the computer is locked? The software runs in the background, so the computer does not need to be unlocked. It must be powered on and online.
